A complete outdoor living overhaul built around the pool: a travertine pool deck and patio, a Trex composite deck and walkway, a segmental retaining wall with built-in steps, a new pool fence, and the drainage to keep it all dry.
The goal: one connected outdoor space
This Grier Heights backyard in Charlotte had a pool, but the spaces around it did not work together. The homeowners wanted the deck, patio, walkway, and yard to feel like one finished space, and they wanted water handled properly on a lot that slopes away from the house.
Because every part of this project was handled by one crew, the surfaces, grades, and drainage were planned together instead of patched together trade by trade.
What we built
Travertine pool deck and patio
Travertine pavers cover the pool deck and the patio by the house. Tumbled travertine is a popular pool surface because it tends to stay cooler underfoot than many concrete pavers and has a textured, slip-resistant finish. Gray coping frames the pool edge.
Drainage built into the stone
Linear channel drains are set flush into the travertine to carry splash-out and rain off the deck. Below grade, a French drain and regrading move runoff away from the house, the pool, and the walls.

Trex deck and walkway
A Trex composite deck and walkway connect the house to the pool deck. Composite decking will not rot or splinter and needs no staining, which makes it a good match for a wet, high-traffic pool area.
Retaining wall, steps, and fence
On the downhill side, a curved segmental block retaining wall holds the grade, with built-in steps and a tiered planter. A black aluminum fence encloses the pool.
We handle the hardscape, decking, walls, and drainage under one roof, so nothing gets lost between trades.
The finished space
The pool, deck, patio, and yard now read as one design, and water has a planned path off every surface. We also extended this home’s driveway: see the Grier Heights driveway extension.

Questions homeowners ask us
Is travertine a good choice for a pool deck?
It is one of the most popular pool deck surfaces in the Charlotte area. Tumbled travertine has a textured, slip-resistant finish and tends to stay more comfortable underfoot in summer than many darker pavers.
Why add channel drains to a pool deck?
Pool decks collect splash-out and rain. Channel drains catch that water at the surface and carry it away, so it does not pool on the deck or run toward the house.
Do you build composite (Trex) decks?
Yes. We build composite decks and walkways, often as part of a larger patio or pool project.
Can one contractor handle the deck, walls, fence, concrete, and drainage?
Yes. That is what we did here. One crew planning grades, surfaces, and drainage together usually means a cleaner result and fewer scheduling gaps.
