This driveway narrowed into two concrete ribbon strips across the lawn, so there was nowhere to park or turn around. We added a full-width concrete parking and turnaround pad that ties into the existing drive. Done in two days.

Before: two ribbon strips across the lawn. After: a full-width concrete pad that still connects to the path to the backyard.
The problem: nowhere to park or turn around
The driveway ran along the side of the house, then narrowed into two concrete ribbon strips crossing the lawn to the backyard. Any extra car ended up on the grass, and backing all the way out to the street was the only way to turn around.
How we built it
- Excavation. We removed the grass at the end of the drive with a compact track loader and graded the subbase.
- Forms. Wood forms were set to tie the new slab into both the existing driveway and the ribbon strips.
- Pour. Concrete was poured straight from the ready-mix truck, then screeded and finished.
- Control joints. Joints were tooled at angles that follow the taper of the new slab, so it reads as part of the original drive.

The finished extension
The homeowners now have room to park and turn around without driving on the lawn, and the new pad still connects to the path to the backyard. We also rebuilt the pool area at this same home: see the Grier Heights travertine pool deck project.

Questions homeowners ask us
Can you extend an existing concrete driveway?
Yes. We tie new concrete into your existing driveway so it looks like one continuous surface, as shown here.
How long before I can drive on a new driveway extension?
Foot traffic is usually fine within a day or two. For cars, we typically recommend waiting about a week, and we will give you exact guidance for your pour and the weather.
Do I need a permit to widen my driveway?
It depends on your city, the location of the work, and your HOA. Work near the street or curb often needs approval. We will go over what applies to your property during the estimate.
How long does a driveway extension take?
This one took two days from excavation to finished concrete. Most residential extensions take a few days depending on size and access.
