A backyard that sloped away from the house became a raised, level paver patio held up by a segmental retaining wall, with lit steps from the covered porch, a built-in grill and griddle station, and landscape lighting.
The challenge: a sloped yard you could not use
This Indian Land backyard sloped away from the house, so the area off the covered porch was uneven and hard to use. The homeowners wanted a level place to cook, eat, and gather that connected directly to the porch.
How we built it
- Clearing. We cleared the area to open up the site and expose the true grade.
- Retaining wall. A segmental block retaining wall was built to hold back the slope and create a level platform, with a curved end that follows the yard.
- Raised paver patio. Large-format pavers in a random pattern, framed by a charcoal border.
- Steps and lighting. Wide paver steps with built-in step lights connect the covered porch, a second set of steps leads down to the yard, and low-voltage path lights line the base of the wall.
- Grill station and planting. A stone-veneer grill island with a stone countertop holds a built-in grill and griddle. New mulch beds and shrubs finish the base of the wall.

A retaining wall and raised patio can turn it into your favorite room of the house. We will show you what is possible on a free site visit.
The finished space
The homeowners now step straight from the covered porch onto a level patio with a full grill station, and the lighting makes it usable well after dark.

Questions homeowners ask us
Do I need a retaining wall to build a patio on a slope?
Usually, yes. On a sloped yard a retaining wall holds the fill that makes the patio level and keeps it from shifting over time.
Can you add a grill station or outdoor kitchen to a patio?
Yes. We build grill islands sized for the appliances you choose, like the grill and griddle station here.
Do you install patio and step lighting?
Yes. Step lights and low-voltage path lights are easiest to add while the patio and walls are being built.
Do you work in Indian Land?
Yes. We work throughout Indian Land, Fort Mill, Tega Cay, Lancaster, and the south Charlotte area.
