The goal: beds that look built-in

The front beds of this Mount Holly home sat flat against the lawn with no real edge, and the backyard had no defined planting area.

The homeowners wanted clean, raised beds that would hold soil and mulch in place and look like part of the house.

How we did it

  1. Layout and base. We marked each bed and set a level, compacted base for the first course.
  2. Build the walls. Segmental block walls, stepped and curved to fit each space.
  3. Cap. Coping caps finish the top of each wall.
  4. Fill. Fresh soil, ready for planting.

Why raised beds with block walls?

Block walls keep soil and mulch from washing onto the lawn, help plant beds drain, give you a clean edge to mow against, and outlast timber borders. Caps give them a finished look.

The finished beds

The front entry now has a clean, capped planting bed framing the porch, and the backyard has a defined bed ready for planting.

Questions homeowners ask us

Block or timber for raised beds?

Timber is cheaper up front but rots over time. Segmental block lasts much longer and looks more finished.

How tall should a raised garden bed be?

Most front-entry beds look best low, one to two feet. Vegetable beds are often taller for easier reach.

Can you add lighting to the beds?

Yes. Low-voltage lights are easiest to add while the walls go up.

Do you work in Mount Holly?

Yes. We work throughout Mount Holly, Belmont, Gastonia and the west side of the Charlotte metro.
