The goal: a backyard field the kids could actually use

This Fort Mill family had a large, walled area behind the house and kids who play soccer. Natural grass in a high-traffic play area wears into bare patches, turns muddy after rain, and needs constant mowing and watering.

They wanted a surface that would hold up to daily games, drain after storms, and look good from the patio without the upkeep.

How we did it

  1. Remove the old grass. We stripped the existing sod and soil inside the walled area down to a stable subgrade.
  2. Build the base. A crushed stone base went in and was compacted in layers, so the field stays flat under constant running and cutting.
  3. Lay the turf. Turf was rolled out, seamed, and trimmed tight to the block border so there are no gaps or trip edges.
  4. Infill and groom. Infill was spread and brushed in to keep the blades standing and the surface consistent underfoot.

Why turf works so well for backyard sports

A natural grass field in a backyard rarely gets enough sun, rest, or water to recover from daily games, so goal mouths and sidelines wear bare fast. Artificial turf on a compacted stone base keeps its shape and color under constant use, drains through its backing after rain, and is ready to play as soon as the weather clears.

The finished field

The family now has a green, flat soccer field steps from the patio. Games go on after a storm, there is no mud tracked into the house, and the only upkeep is an occasional rinse and brush.

Questions homeowners ask us

Can artificial turf handle daily soccer and play?

Yes. On a properly compacted stone base, quality turf handles daily running, cutting and goal-mouth wear far better than natural grass in a backyard.

Does a turf field drain after rain?

Yes. Turf has a permeable backing, and the stone base underneath lets water pass through and away, so the field is usually playable soon after rain stops.

Does artificial turf get hot?

It can get warm in direct afternoon sun, like most outdoor surfaces. Many families play in the morning or evening in summer, and a quick rinse cools it down.

How much does a backyard turf field cost?

It depends on size, site prep, base depth and the turf you choose. We break down the main cost factors in our turf cost guide and give exact pricing after a free site visit.
