A full backyard finish in Fort Mill: wall-to-wall artificial turf, a low stone wall with built-in lights along the fence, stone-edged beds around the deck, and a stepping stone path to the kids’ play tower.
The goal: a finished yard that works day and night
This Fort Mill backyard had a new wood privacy fence, a deck and a play tower for the kids, but the yard itself was not finished. Grass struggled, the edges along the fence and deck had no definition, and once the sun went down the yard went dark.
The homeowners wanted a clean, low-maintenance lawn, a finished edge along the fence and deck, an easy path to the play tower, and lighting so they could use the space in the evening.
How we did it
- Grade and prep. We graded the yard so water moves away from the house and deck, then prepared the subgrade for turf.
- Build the stone wall and borders. A low stacked stone wall went in along the fence line, and stone borders were set around the deck beds.
- Wire the lighting. Low-voltage lights were built into the wall cap and the deck border while the walls were going up.
- Base and turf. A compacted stone base, then turf rolled out across the whole yard, seamed and trimmed to the walls and borders.
- Set the stepping stones. Natural stone steppers were set flush in the turf to make a curved path to the play tower.

We combine turf, stone walls and lighting so the whole yard is finished at once. Get a free on-site estimate.
Why build the lighting in with the walls
Lighting is easiest and cleanest to add while walls and borders are being built. The wire runs are hidden inside the wall and under the turf, the fixtures sit level in the cap, and there is no trenching through a finished lawn later.
The finished yard
The yard is green year-round with no mowing, the fence and deck have clean stone edges, the kids have a path to the play tower, and the lights turn the whole space into an evening hangout.

Questions homeowners ask us
Can you add landscape lighting to a retaining wall?
Yes. Wall-cap and wall-face lights are best installed while the wall is built, so wiring stays hidden inside the wall.
Can stepping stones go in artificial turf?
Yes. We set the stones on the compacted base and cut the turf around each one so they sit flush and stay put.
Is artificial turf good for kids and play areas?
It is one of the most popular choices for families: no mud, no bare patches, and it is ready to play on soon after rain.
