Same backyard: thin grass and bare spots (left) and the finished turf lawn (right).

The problem: grass that would not grow in the shade

Big trees shade much of this Tega Cay backyard. The grass thinned out, bare dirt spread, and the shaded area by the deck barely grew at all, no matter how much it was watered.

How we did it

  1. Remove the old lawn. Thin grass and roots came out.
  2. Build the base. A graded, compacted stone base so the turf stays flat and drains.
  3. Turf around the trees. Turf was cut around each trunk, leaving room for river rock rings.
  4. Seam, infill and finish. Seams joined, infill brushed in, and edges tucked to the beds.

Grass will not grow in your shady yard?

Why turf works in shady yards

Most lawn grasses need several hours of direct sun a day to stay thick. Under mature trees they thin out and leave bare dirt. Turf stays full and green regardless of sun, and river rock rings around the trunks let the trees get water and air.

The finished lawn

The backyard is green from the deck to the tree line, with no bare spots, no mowing and no mud.

Questions homeowners ask us

Does artificial turf work in the shade?

Yes. Turf does not need sun, which makes it one of the best options for shady yards where grass struggles.

What about the trees?

We leave a ring around each trunk, filled with river rock here, so the trees still get water and air.

What does artificial turf cost?

It depends on size, base work and turf type. See what drives turf costs.

Do you work in Tega Cay?

Yes. We work throughout Tega Cay, Fort Mill, Rock Hill and Indian Land.
