Lancaster, SC Backyard Turf: A Curved, Low-Maintenance Lawn in Roselyn

The problem: grass that would not cooperate

This backyard in the Roselyn community had patchy, high-maintenance grass on clay-dense soil, between a deck, a paver patio and a curved border.

The homeowners wanted a yard that looked good all year without mowing, watering or mud.

How we did it

1. Remove the grass. The old lawn and roots came out.
2. Build the base. On clay-dense soil, we graded and compacted a stone base with drainage in mind.
3. Cut to the curve. Turf was fitted to the curved border, patio and deck steps.
4. Seam and infill. Seams joined, edges secured, and infill brushed in.

Artificial turf on clay soil

Clay drains slowly, so turf on clay needs a properly graded, compacted base that gives water a path out. Skip that step and water can sit under the turf. Getting the base right is most of the job.

The finished yard

The backyard is green year-round with no mowing, and the turf ties the deck, patio and curved border into one clean space.

Does artificial turf get hot?

In direct summer sun, turf can get warmer than natural grass. Shade, lighter colors and a quick rinse on hot days help.

How long does artificial turf last?

Quality residential turf commonly lasts many years, often 10 to 15 or more with basic care.

Does turf need maintenance?

Very little: occasional brushing, rinsing and clearing leaves. No mowing, fertilizing or watering.
